Reusable nappy liners are really simple to make and are a great idea if you use cloth nappies on your baby.
Why choose reusable nappy liners?
If you have a baby in cloth nappies, then you may well have discovered that nappy liners can be a good idea. Nappy liners help to catch solids, making cleaning up easier. They can also protect your cloth nappy from nappy creams, which can build up in the fibres of cloth nappies making them less absorbent. Although there are a number of disposable options on the market, often a reusable liner is a better choice. If you choose the right fabric, the nappy liner will also make the nappy more comfortable. Many fabrics stop liquid from sitting against the skin, giving a stay dry effect.
Fabrics
Microfleece makes a great choice to use as a nappy liner. It is easy to wash and take care of. It doesn’t fray, so doesn’t need to be sewn. The other advantage of choosing microfleece is that it acts as a stay dry layer. The fabric allows liquid to pass through it, but not back through. Liquid can pass through the liner into the nappy, where it will be absorbed, but then the liner feels dry against your baby’s skin, reducing the chance of irritation. We stock microfleece in white or black. Both are inexpensive and a great choice if you are looking to make your own liners.
How to
Making your own liners is as simple as getting the fabric, deciding on size and then cutting them out. You can choose to have a large liner that covers the whole area, or a smaller size. I tended to find that large rectangles were best for night time use, but used something smaller in the day time. As the fabric is a knit fabric, you will not need to sew the ends, as they will not fray. Cutting out the liners is really a job that only takes a few minutes. Once you have your liners ready to go, they should last you for years, saving you money and keeping your nappies in good condition.
