How to use Kam snap pliers: Wondering how to use KAM snap pliers? Want to start attaching KAM snaps to everything? Follow our simple guide to using your Kam Snap pliers.
Getting ready to use Kam snap pliers
Before starting to apply your KAM snaps, make sure that you are using enough layers of fabric, ideally we would recommend using at least two layers (if the fabric is very thin you may need more) if needed you can use a scrap of fabric to reinforce the fabric where you are going to attach your snap. Also, check that you have the right parts, you will need a cap for each socket or stud that you wish to attach.
Attaching your KAM snaps
First of all make a hole where you want to attach your snap with an awl, this step isn’t essential, but it does make fixing the snap in the right place a little easier.
Now push the prong of your cap through the hole you have made in the fabric. Once you have done this you can push the socket or stud in place over the prong.
You can now place the snap into the snap pliers, make sure that the cap is firmly in the die in the snap pliers. The snap may be damaged if you do not place it in the die properly.
Once you are happy with the position of the snap within your pliers you are now ready do use KAM snap pliers, squeeze down on them firmly, applying as much pressure as you can.
Your snap should be now fixed firmly into the fabric. If you feel that the centre is not squashed down enough, you can always place the snap back into the pliers and give them another squeeze. Again you should make sure that the cap is properly within the bottom die.
Once you have attached both studs and sockets to your piece, you should try fastening them together just to check that all is as it should be. Damaged snaps may not fasten well. The centre prong should be flattened enough, and ensure that you have not damaged either the socket or stud.
Removing KAM snaps
Try to avoid needing to remove snaps from your items, as this can be difficult. If you do find that you have to remove the snap, we do stock snap removal pliers that will do the job. If you don’t have these then you can either try cutting the snap with nail clippers, melting the centre of the snap out, or placing the snap sideways into the snap pliers and squeezing until it breaks off. Once you have removed a snap you will find that it will leave quite a large hole, so bear this in mind if you decide that you need to remove a snap.
