Wondering why minky fabric is such a good choice for your sewing projects? There are so many lovely fabrics available so why would you decide to use minky? There are lots of things that minky is just the best choice for. I thought that I would share some examples of things that people have made and show why minky is such a good choice.

Soft toys

When it comes to making soft toys, you really can’t beat the squishy softness of minky. There are plenty of other fake fur and piled fabrics on the market, but there are few that come close to the softness of minky. Unlike many other fabrics, it is also a knit fabric, which gives it a slight stretch. This means that you can get a nicer finish to items that you sew. This bunny from Lille Bee Creations is a great example of the kind of thing that you can make with minky.

Cloth nappies

The first time that I really came across minky was as an outer fabric for cloth nappies. Although it isn’t waterproof itself and needs a hidden waterproof layer underneath, it really is a good choice for pretty cloth nappies. Minky fabric is not only soft against delicate baby skin, cutting down on the chance of rubbing, but it also doesn’t soak up water. Although fabric on the outside of the nappy shouldn’t get directly wet, it can cause nappies to leak if it is absorbent as it can draw liquid out at the edges. Minky is a polyester fabric which means that it won’t absorb any liquid. It also looks really good when used with embroidery or applique such as this lovely nappy from Booty Couture.

Soft Furnishings

I have used minky a few times to make cushions and even to cover a bench seat. It’s lovely and soft so it works really well for all kinds of soft furnishings. I particularly like these emoji cushions that were made by one of our customers, Darelle for her children for Christmas. I quite often try to make gifts for birthdays and Christmas and minky fabric is often used. Minky is soft, durable and washes well, which makes it perfect for many sewing projects.
