When I was pregnant with my third baby, my maternity night shirts had had it. I needed a new nursing night shirt that didn’t cost the earth. I looked for a while for one, and then decided to convert a regular night shirt to make it into a nursing night shirt. It was very easy to do, and since then I’ve made myself a couple more, so I thought I’d share this no-sew nursing night shirt tutorial with you now.
Materials for the no-sew nursing night shirt tutorial
To follow the no-sew nursing night shirt tutorial you will need:
- A basic night shirt with a ‘v’ or crew neck, I went a couple of sizes bigger to accommodate my bump before having my baby. This needs to be a knit fabric, similar to a t-shirt.
- Scissors
- A tape measure
- Kam snaps
- Kam snap pliers
How to make
- First of all measure yourself from approx where the neck line of the night shirt starts to just below your breasts. You will need enough room to comfortably expose your breast, enough to feed your baby.
- Secondly, measure on your nursing top, and mark that distance. Making sure that this is the very centre of the neck line. On a ‘v’ neck, this is obvious, but on a round neck fold in half to find the centre.
- Now cut down in a line from the centre of then neck line to the length you have measured. As this is a knit fabric, it will not fray.
- Make four marks at equal distance for your snaps, the first should be at the very top and the last about 2.5 cm (1 inch) above the bottom of the cut you have made.
- Fold the fabric over by about 1 cm (0.4 inch), to the inside of the shirt and place your snaps female side facing up on one side of the shirt.
- On the other side of the opening, mark out matching snap placements for the male side, attach these with the ‘cap’ of the snaps facing up. Again fold the fabric under around 1 cm (0.4 inch) to the centre of the shirt.
