Making washable nappy liners is one of the simplest things that you can do as they require no sewing, and you don’t have to be particularly crafty to make them. Making washable nappy liners is a great way to add to your cloth nappy accessories cheaply and easily.
What fabric to use when making washable nappy liners
When it comes to making washable nappy liners, ideally you need a fabric that allows liquid to pass though but not come back against the skin. The main purpose of a nappy liner is to catch any solid waste and to help keep your little ones skin. Microfleece is ideal for this, as it quickly wicks liquid through the fabric, and then feels dry against the skin. It is often used as a stay dry layer in shaped nappies, such as pocket nappies, but it is quite simple to cut out a liner and use it as a removable layer in any type of cloth nappy. Our microfleece is great for making washable nappy liners, because it is not too thick and warm, and allows liquid to pass though easily. You can choose from classic white, or black, which is less likely to show stains and marks.
What shape to make reusable nappy liners
Choosing the shape when making washable nappy liners is really down to personal preference. The simplest shape is a rectangle which covers the whole of the nappy area. Other people prefer an hourglass shape, which is slightly thinner between the legs. Another suggestion is to make the nappy liner bigger than the centre of the nappy, as long as it does not stick out past the outer cover or shell, then it will work well. If you are using these on a padfolded prefold, then a larger size works well as you can wrap it around the whole nappy and then cover with the nappy cover.
Simple washable nappy liners
The great thing about making washable nappy liners is that they do not require any sewing. You can simply cut them to shape and because the microfleece is a knit fabric and will not fray you do not need to sew the edges. From a piece of microfleece fabric you can get a large amount of liners, saving you money as they are reusable and washable.
