Although minky fabric, being polyester, is quite hard wearing and easy to care for, over time it is likely to loose some of it’s softness and the length from the pile. To get the most out of your minky fabric and keep it looking like new for longer, here are our top tips for caring for minky fabric.
Top tips for caring for minky fabric
- Never hot wash; minky is a polyester fabric and heat will damage it. If you wash the fabric on too hot a temperature, it will damage the pile and stop it feeling so nice and soft.
- Do not iron; again, because of the heat, ironing minky will do more harm than good. It shouldn’t need ironing in any case.
- Try not to squash it; if it is stored somewhere where the fabric is squashed, it probably won’t do it much good. Usually the fabric will be fine and bounce back, but it is best avoided.
- Avoid fabric softeners; these will coat the fibres and possibly even cause them to stick together, the fabric is so soft that you won’t need to use it in any case.
- Avoid bleach; although it’s unlikely that bleach will cause the colours to be removed, bleach will damage the fibres and weaken them, so it is best avoided.
- Brush lightly; if the pile has become stuck together, a very light brush can restore it slightly, as long as it isn’t pulling out the fibres as you brush.
Easy care
On the whole minky fabric is very easy to care for and look after. There isn’t anything that is complicated or difficult when caring for minky fabric. It is fully machine washable and being a knit fabric will not fray when cut (although beware, some minky fabrics do create a lot of minky fluff when you cut them).

I have a minky called FrOsted Bella it has become matted around the edges and is sheDding. Any advice on how I can correct it?
Is it sewn to anything? Are the edges just cut or is there something on them. I don’t know that particular minky. I would suggest a gentle hand wash and possibly bushing the pile when dry, but trying not to tear the fibres.
