What are the different types minky fabrics?

There are lots of types of minky fabrics, but what exactly are they? Here we are going to show some of the main styles that we stock.

Different types of minky fabrics

Minky fabric doesn’t just come in the usual smooth variety. You can get it in a variety of textures and with different pile lengths. When it comes to choosing the right fabric for your project, then you don’t need to just stick to which colour works best. You can also choose the fabric style or type that looks and feels the best. Here is our guide to some of the styles.

Smooth

Smooth minky is just what it sounds like. Soft and smooth to the touch. The pile for this kind of fabric is usually around 3 mm which gives it a nice feel. It is this smooth style that is usually used for printed minky fabrics, tie-dye and plain colours. If you are looking for something soft and smooth, but that doesn’t have a great deal of texture, then this is ideal for you.

Dimple dot

Another very popular type of minky fabric is dimple dot. This is in fact smooth minky that has been heat-treated in order to give it a raised dot pattern. It is usually available in similar colours to the plain smooth minky. As the texture is created by heat, it is usually advised that you do not iron this fabric or use a hot wash or tumble drier. Heat can get rid of the dimple dot pattern if you are not careful.

Super Plush

If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, then super plush minky could be a good choice for you. This fabric has a longer pile than standard minky. It can range from around 5 mm long to our really deep 30 mm long piled fabrics. These fabrics are perfect for soft toys, furnishings, clothing and anything that needs that little bit of extra squishiness.

Rose

Rose minky fabric, also sometimes known as rosette minky is a type of super plush fabric. Unlike the other fabric that we stock, this is actually a woven fabric rather than knit. It has a deep pile that has a swirl texture that makes it look like little roses across the fabric. The fabric does not lay flat and has quite a fixed texture to it.

Ribbon

Another type of embossed or textured minky is ribbon minky. We currently don’t stock a large amount of this style of fabric, although we may be able to get it in if you are interested. The minky fabric is split into strips, rather like corduroy fabric. The ridges of the fabric have the longer pile, which is around 3 mm similar to smooth minky. The rest of the fabric is much shorter which is what gives it this ribbon effect.
