A Waterproof layer
Most modern cloth nappies require a waterproof layer build into the nappy, ideally you want to use a fabric that is waterproof, lightweight and breathable when you make modern cloth nappies. PUL fabric is ideal for this purpose. It washes well, and is hard wearing which means that it will stand up to all that your baby throws at it.
A stay dry layer
When you are going to make modern cloth nappies, you will probably want to include a stay dry layer. This is a layer of fabric that helps your baby feel dry, and keeps moisture away from their skin. There are a number of fabrics that will do this job, but microfleece works particularly well. It wicks moisture away from the skin and into the absorbent layer of the nappy.
An absorbent layer
As the one of the main purposes of a cloth nappy is to absorb urine, you will need an absorbent layer that soaks up liquid when you decide to make modern cloth nappies. There are a lot of options for this, but our bamboo fleece plus, is highly effective, being highly absorbent and soft. You can actually sew this into the nappy for an all-in-one style, or make a removable absorbent pad to stuff your nappy with.
Other things you need to make modern cloth nappies
In addition to everything else mentioned you will also need:
- A sewing machine
- Thread
- A pattern
- Elastics
- Fastenings (either velcro or snaps are popular)
A decorative layer
For a lot of people, the reason that they wish to make modern cloth nappies is that they want to make decorative, unusual and pretty nappies. Minky fabric is ideal for this purpose as you can use it as a soft, decorative layer that will not wick moisture from the inside of the nappy. Minky fabric is usually used by placing it over the top of the PUL layer on the outside of the nappy.
