Every single year, just after Christmas, I promise myself that next year I will make most of my Christmas gifts. Unfortunately that’s as far as it ever goes and the great make your own Christmas gifts lie happens.
Good intentions
I always start off with such great intentions; THIS year I’m going to make lots of things for lots of people. I even get as far as googling ideas, looking for ‘make your own Christmas gifts’ suggestions or looking on pinterest. I usually start doing this when I’ve got plenty of time, and might actually get as far as getting a few Christmas gifts on the go. The problem is that, for me at least, that’s often as far as I get. Lots of good ideas, lots of time searching for make your own Christmas gifts suggestions, and then…… You’ve guessed it, it doesn’t get any further. In fact if anything I seem to waste even more time looking on-line at the things that I could make, if I ever got around to it.
The make your own Christmas Gift lie
This is where the make your own Christmas Gift lie comes in, there are plenty of people out there, I’m sure, who make their own presents at Christmas time, but I’m not one of them. I don’t think that the likes of pinterest helps; pages and pages of great ideas of things that you can make. It comes down to two things, a lack of time to make these fantastic creations, and perhaps more importantly, a lack of talent. When you see all of these wonderful creations on people’s blogs, you start to believe that you can perfectly create them yourself. Sometimes it’s true, you really can create something impressive, but all too often my attempts fall flat. You flick through the images and start to believe that you can make your own Christmas gifts. The other part of the lie of course, is the lie that you tell yourself, the one when you think that this year you really will make your own Christmas gifts. I know that I would love to be able to next year, and probably thought the same last year, but here we are, just a couple of weeks out from Christmas, and I know that this year at least I’ve left it far too late.
Maybe it’s just me, I’d like to think that lots of you out there really do make your own Christmas gifts each year.
