Bamboo fleece

Bamboo fleece fabric is one of my favourite fabrics when it comes to cloth nappy making.  It’s soft, absorbent, and relatively easy to work with.  Our Bamboo fleece plus, is one of the better fleece fabrics that I have used, and it has a little extra that makes it even more special.

Why bamboo?

When I first heard that bamboo could be made into a fabric, I have to admit that I was less than convinced.  I thought that it was going to be one of these fads, and not really worth giving a go.  I did try it though, and one of the first cloth nappies that I bought was made out of bamboo, and I have to admit that I was converted. There are some great features of bamboo fleece, and for that matter other bamboo fabrics:

  • It absorbs lots of liquid, more than the equivalent weight of cotton would do.
  • It’s lovely and soft, and more importantly it retains it’s softness after use.
  • It’s extra absorbency means that you can get a much thinner, and less bulky layer, without missing out on the ability to soak up liquid.

All of these features make it a great choice for making cloth nappies, cloth nappy inserts and other items that need an absorbent layer.

Uses for bamboo fleece fabric

There are many things that you can use bamboo fleece fabric for, it usually comes in a natural cream colour, but you could dye it if you want something different.  As it is so absorbent, it is ideal for using in things that need an absorbent layer, such as:

  • Cloth nappies
  • Cloth nappy inserts or boosters
  • Washable breast pads
  • Reusable cloth menstrual pads
  • Protective pads on car seats when toilet training
  • Bibs
  • Or anything else that you might want an absorbent, trim layer in.

Bamboo fleece plus

Bamboo fleece plus? Plus what? What is it that’s added to our bamboo fleece?  The plus in our fleece is actually coolplus, a fast wicking synthetic fabric which helps the bamboo to absorb liquid even faster.  This makes it even more suitable for items that need an absorbent layer.

Would 100% bamboo not be better?

You might be wondering why we don’t stock 100% bamboo fabric, surely if bamboo is all that I say it is, wouldn’t that be better?  Our fabric is 60% bamboo, 30% organic cotton and 10% cool plus.  The reason for this is that the mixture of fabrics gives it better stability.  I have made things with 100% bamboo before, and sadly it just doesn’t last, I had some nappy inserts made with the 100% bamboo fleece, and after six months of use, they were ripped and falling apart.  The addition of another fibre, such as cotton helps to give the fabric some stability, and makes it last longer.

If you’re looking for a great quality, high performing bamboo fleece, then our bamboo fleece plus is a great place to start.
